I found a great video that tackles this very question with an in-depth experiment. In the video, Rob from Michigan Rocks sets out and tests three barrels of desert jasper: one with only water, one with sand, and one with silicon carbide grit, to see which method is the most effective at shaping and polishing rocks after just a week of tumbling.
