The Cave in Rock district has stratiform deposits, or bedding plane deposits, of fluorite, which also happens to be Illinois’ state mineral. The area has a very long and rich history of mining fluorite, with mines operating from the 1840s until the Annabel Lee Mine closed as recent as 1995.
