When it comes to high end office furniture, you might expect plush leather or ergonomic design, but an office chair carved from a giant amethyst crystal definitely isn’t the first thing that comes to peoples minds. This “special” amethyst chair, priced at approximately $3,400, isn’t your run-of-the-mill seat. Factory-M, a Japanese enterprise known for its work with semi-precious stones, put this item in the limelight with social media images that garnered wide-eyed reactions.
As you can imagine, the chair has sparked more than a few discussions online with most folks questioning its comfort, myself included. It boasts an L-shaped body of amethyst nestled on a robust metal base. To ensure safety, the naturally occurring sharp fragments were smoothened. Regardless, sitting on a cold, hard crystal sounds about as good as lying on bed of nails.
Originating from the creative vision of Koichi Hasegawa, Factory-M’s founder, the chair was both a stroke of inspiration and a stroke of luck. Struck by the sight of a large L-shaped amethyst during a stateside stone hunt, Hasegawa saw more than just a sparkling surface—he saw potential furniture.
Despite skepticism regarding its ease of use, Hasegawa asserts that the chair is indeed sit-worthy. It’s so sturdy, in fact, that Factory-M claims “even a sumo wrestler could take a seat without concern.” – Their words…not mine.
For those considering the amethyst office chair, here’s what to consider:
- Cost: 450,000 yen (~$3,400)
- Comfort: Subjective but sleek finish
- Statement: Bold and attention-grabbing
- Durability: Supports heavy weight
